Flavours of Sri-Lanka 05 Nights / 06 Days Tour

Found at the bottom of India, a teardrop shaped little exotic island of Sri Lanka is abundant with marvellous discoveries for any tourist. Be it a journey of exploring the wilderness, an ayurvedic wellness holiday, a relaxing getaway in the sun or even that quick business trip, there is something for everyone that Sri Lanka has to offer. The entire island of Sri Lanka is teeming with bird life and exotics like elephants and leopards.

Day 1 – (Arrive Colombo)

Welcome to ‘Flavours of Sri-Lanka’ tour!

On arrival, at the airport in Colombo, you will be met by our representative. Post customs and immigration, transfer to your hotel in Negombo (20 km from / approx. 40 minutes drive) and check in (after 1400 hours).

Later, visit St. Mary’s Church, one of the largest Roman Catholic church in Sri Lanka. The unique paintings on the life of Christ on the ceiling is must watch here. Later explore Dutch waterways

Day 2 – Negombo / Dambulla by surface (130 Km: 03 hrs drive)

Early morning experience the fish auctions at the beach and witness the fisherman’s selling varieties of fishes in the market near the fort. It is a slippery and smelly affair, but one that’s worth visiting.

Today after a delicious breakfast, drive to Dambulla. En route visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village. 

It takes care of young elephants that have lost their mothers, many of them due to conflict with humans. Visitors can get to acquaint themselves with the pachyderms, especially the calves, which are rather endearing. A favourite activity is bathing, which the elephants and their human observers enjoy hugely. If you get lucky, you might even be allowed to bottle feed the baby elephants an unforgettable experience.

Later, proceed to Dambulla to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a massive rock towering above the plains of Dambulla. 

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the best preserved of Sri Lanka cave complexes and has been a sacred place for over two centuries. The complex comprises over 80 caves, five of which are the important ones with over 150 statues mainly of Buddha, and of Sri Lankan kings, gods and goddesses. Also, visit the Dambulla Museum, which exhibits Buddha images from Thailand, Burma, China, Japan, Korea and Singapore.

Day 3 – (In Dambulla)

Today, after a scrumptious breakfast, proceed to visit Sigiriya, the 5th-century rock citadel of King Kasyapa and the World Heritage Site. Sigiriya doesn’t only boasts of ancient Sri Lankan engineering and urban planning supremacy but also acclaims to be one of the finest monuments of art and culture. Step through the gigantic ‘Lion Paws’ – overlooking the symmetrical royal gardens below to comprehend the absolute splendor that once dominated this rock fortress. referred to by some as Lion’s Rock, built during the 5th century. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most unmistakable points of interest and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sigiriya Rock looms 200 meters over the fields, sitting above the encompassing farmland giving expansive perspectives. Sigiriya, considered as an engineering wonder as it includes sophisticated hydraulic systems, water-retaining structures and one of the oldest landscape gardens in the world.

Later, visit Polonnaruwa the second ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Find the glories of that age in the archeological fortunes, influenced by both Buddhist, and Hindu roots make the city more prominent and diverse. During your visit, witness keen details the ancients have put when building these great architectural monuments.

Then proceed to Minneriya national park and enjoy an Safari at Minneriya National Park 14:30-17:00 – The Minneriya/Kaudulla National Park includes a 249 square km reservoir, built by King Mahasen about 15 centuries ago.In the dry months from Mayust to October, more than 300 wild elephants. Gather on the shores of the reservoir. This gathering is the highlight of the National Park and is one the largest in the wild anywhere in the world. You may also see spotted deer, sambur, and dozens of species of birds.

Day 4 – Dambulla / Kandy by surface (80 Km: 02 hrs drive)

Post a hearty breakfast, proceed to Kandy. En route visit Ranweli Spice Garden, a fun place to see, learn and guess the Sri Lankan spices and herbs. After seeing around the garden, spices can also be purchased as a souvenir.

Temple of Tooth Relic, is the Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy named so as it houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. Floral offerings pile up on theatre; blooming drums and high-pitched melody of horn-like instruments lighten up the whole ambience.

On arrival in Kandy, check in to the hotel.

Later, proceed for a sightseeing of Kandy, visiting the Temple of Tooth Relic, Embekka Devalaya, Gadaladeniya Temple, Lankatilaka Vihara, Kandy National Museum and Kandyan Art association.

Later, visit the Embekka Devalaya, a temple with wooden pillars that are renowned for their carvings of swans, lions, dancers and wrestlers. Dating back the 18th century the temple was built by King Vikramabahu III and is dedicated to the god Kataragama. It also includes the Buddha image house, a bodhi tree and an ancient warehouse for storing paddy called vee bissa

Also, visit the Gadaladeniya Temple, built during the time of King Buwanekabahu IV in 1344, the temple is built on a rocky outcrop and reached through steps cut in the rocks. The bodhi tree and a large Buddha statue which is out of a rock, plastered and painted gold are the highlights of the temple.

Thereafter, visit the Lankatilaka Vihara, a whitewashed brick structure with a stone base and a multi-tiered tile roof. built on a rock on the outskirts of Kandy during the reign of King Buwenakabahu IV, the temple dates back to the 14th century. a whitewashed brick
Post sightseeing, return to the hotel.

Day 5 – Kandy / Colombo by surface (120 Km: 03 hrs drive)

Post breakfast drives to Colombo, on arrival check-in at hotel.

Further, proceed to Pettah, one of the oldest districts in Colombo and one of the interesting places to spend your time. Explore the famous local Pettah market where, you will find everything ranging from a needle to sarees. This place doesn’t miss anything out. It’s a perfect place for budget shopping and a great experience walking through different colourful bazaars.

Later, proceed for a Colombo city tour and witness the fantastic view of the Colombo Harbor, Lighthouse with Clock Tower (older than Big Ben in London) Drive past the President’s House and Old Parliament. Make a brief stop at the Old Dutch Hospital with shops and restaurants facing Sri Lanka’s Twin Tower Buildings.

Visit the Red Mosque, the oldest mosques in Colombo. The architecture and design are what makes it stand out in a highly industrialized area. The uniform contrast of red and white bricks next to each other, topped off with a couple of bulbous domes are what gave it its more commonly known identity as the ‘Red Mosque’.

Thereafter, visit the Dutch Museum, the two storeyed colonnaded building on Prince Street, Pettah which houses this museum was constructed during the Dutch occupation of Colombo (1656 – 1796) and was the formal residence of the Governor of Dutch Ceylon Thomas van Rhee (1634 – 1701). Museum exhibit artefacts including furniture, ceramics, coins and weaponry, portraying the various facets of contemporary life and culture.

 

Also, visit the Wolvendaal Church one of the most important Dutch Colonial era buildings in Sri Lanka, and one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use in the country. It holds Doric style of the period, in the form of a Greek cross, with walls nearly 1.5m (five feet) thick, constructed of unusually large kabok (clay ironstone) with coral and lime plaster.

Continue to the old Racecourse with a maze of buildings with colonial architecture, restaurants and shopping arcade passing through Colombo Town hall mini replica of the White House in Washington, DC and finally to Colombo National Museum, itself an architectural monument

Day 6 – (Depart Colombo)

Today, bid farewell to your ‘Flavours of Sri-Lanka’ tour as you are transferred from hotel to the airport in Colombo for your onward journey, check-in for international flight starts 03 hrs prior to departure time of flight.
